Favorite Lesson Presented at Stanford NanoTechnology Institute by Jill

1. Create data table on bottom of plate or in notes; using textbook diagram of Earth's compositional layers (Holt shown). As do so, discuss the consistency and record layer descriptions.

* Integrate Technology- Can use Excel as a Problem Solving Tool- teach formulas [addition (sum), division (ratio of portion to whole), multiplication (percent of...)], transferring formulas down cells, referring to specific cell, carrying reference from one place to another.

2. Scale calculations

* Integrate Math - 5th/6th grade standards include calculating a ratio, changing it from decimal to percent. Older students, set up as an algebric problem.
* Integrate Technology-Use Excel to Create Graphs (concentric circles, pie chart, bar graph)

3. Transfer to plate- fold into quarters (center of plate where folds intersect), use compass and ruler to create concentric circles to represent each layer, label & color layers,

* Integrate Math- Using a compass, centimeter ruler; could have convert to another metric unit instead of cm.

4. Create 3D model- cut along one radius fold from edge to center of plate, practice turning into 3D shape, figure out where to label without it being lost, fold, staple

5. Combine with others for classroom border, wall art, disco ball, acoustic buffer & more!

6. Avid Closure question? or Create your own table using Excel formulas as if you were making a plate scale model of one of these layered items..... (select one)

* an animal cell (cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus,
* an apple or orange (core, pulpy area, peel)
* ice cream popsicle (stick, ice cream portion, chocolate coating)
* Blow pop (stick, gum, lolly pop, wrapper)
* Other???

or Create a recipe for an edible earth with layers accurate for (1) proportion, and/or (2) consistency- Advanced learners: bring in photo
